We All Have Mental Health

We All Have Mental Health

Mental Health is something that affects us all. In the same way we all have physical health and need to look after it we all have mental health and need to recognise and prioritise it. Today, World Mental Health Day, is a great opportunity to think about our mental health. In this blog post, we will discuss why acknowledging our mental health is an important step toward a healthier and happier life.

Understanding Mental Health

When we talk about mental health, we are referring to our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. This includes our thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and our ability to handle stress and relate to others. It is not something that is only relevant to people with diagnosed mental health conditions. In fact, mental health is simply part of being human.

We experience physical health on a spectrum. It may be excellent, or it may be poor. Our mental health exists on a similar scale. We have times when we feel mentally strong and resilient. At other times, we may feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, or sad. By recognising these natural changes, we can begin to understand our mental health and how to manage it.

The Stigma Surrounding Mental Health

Despite the growing awareness of mental health, stigma still exists. People often feel hesitant to discuss their mental health concerns or seek help when needed. This stigma can lead to isolation and exacerbate poor mental health, possibly leading to a diagnosed mental illness.

Experiencing poor mental or mental ill health does not make someone weak or inadequate. We don’t blame someone for having a physical illness like the flu or a broken bone. We should approach mental health challenges in the same way – with empathy and support. Like many physical illnesses, mental ill health can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or background.

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day is a reminder to break down barriers that may prevent people from seeking help or discussing their mental health. It’s a prompt to show empathy, raise awareness and create conversations around mental health. We need to do this every day though, not just on 10th October.

Here are a few ways we can raise awareness of mental health:

Educate Yourself – learn about mental health, good and bad. As well as learning more about common mental health conditions learn how to maintain good mental health. You may want to consider becoming a Mental Health First Aider. Understanding mental health helps to reduce stigma.

Share Your Story – If you feel able and safe to, share your own experiences with your mental health, the good and not-so-good, with people you trust. Your story might inspire others to seek help or to do something proactive to support good mental health. In these articles, Martin and I both share our previous mental health challenges.

Support and Listen – Be there for friends and family. Sometimes, all it takes is a listening ear and making time to talk. Maintaining positive relationships is a powerful way to support good mental health and social wellbeing.

Promote Self-Care – Encourage and role model self-care practices like exercise, mindfulness, and proper sleep, which can contribute to better mental health.

We all have Mental Health

We all have mental health. Just like we all have physical health.

On World Mental Health Day, let’s recognise that every one of us has mental health. In the same way we think about and support our physical health through exercise, a balanced diet, and healthy choices, we also need to prioritise our mental wellbeing.

You are not alone in your mental health journey. Seeking support when you need it is a courageous step toward a healthier and happier life.
